So, several months ago I applied for a job that I really wanted to do but I was unsuccessful in the interview. At the time, even though it was difficult for me to admit it to myself, I was gutted and I felt useless and a failure.

Last Wednesday I managed to get through to the final 6 for an interview for the same job. For the first interview, I thought I was prepared for their questions, but I crashed and burnt like a drowning rat. For this interview I researched the job properly and spoke to a lovely chap who is currently doing the job.

The interview went brilliantly, I was really happy with myself, and the vibes I received from the two people who interviewed me were positive. Fast forward to last Friday. My wife and I had driven up to Scotland, into the highlands for a much needed break on Wednesday straight after my interview. On Friday, we had found a quaint little pub with a water wheel turning away outside. My mobile rang and I answered. It was one of the people who had interviewed me. She informed me I had unfortunately been unsuccessful.

It put a downer on the rest of the day for me. Again I felt bloody awful.

Today, the phone rang again and I was surprised to hear the same voice at the other end saying hello. Apparently, the person who had been offered the job had declined their offer and they wanted to know if I still wanted the position!

Of course I literally shouted “Yes please”. So I now have the job I have wanted to do for a long time.

For the first time in I don’t know how long I’m feeling happy. Just wanted to share it with you.

  2. I wonder if the interviewer doesn’t always know the best person for the job? “Their loss, not mine” I have sometimes thought. Or they do and they know it’s no you, so they’ve saved you from being in the wrong job? I have been a round peg in a square hole, before. Anyway, congratulations on your achievement and hope you are enjoying your new role.

  10. Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

  12. Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. But think of if you added some great photos or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its niche. Amazing blog!

      1. I know how that goes. And the government doesn’t joke around about the pandemic. So they take all the extra precautions which are slowing the system down. It’s been tough all around. I actually dealt with the government furloughs and hiring freezes, things have been tough (and I didn’t have a husband or family to fall back on).

      3. I did 15 years in the Army and 8 years with the Department of Defense together simultaneously. Blew through all my retirement savings over the government furloughs and hiring freezes. Yay!!! My skill sets don’t go far in the civilian sector. Writing was always my dream job. But got caught up soldiering for way too long. I started over John after the government fell apart. I don’t have many years left but I’m finally doing what I always wanted to do. Write.

      4. Wow, 15 years is a long time to serve your country. I’m impressed 😊 what would you say are your skills. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure that you have lots of transferable skills.
        It’s great that you have a yearning to write. Do you want to write for a newspaper/magazine or write a novel ?

      9. Yups. Hiring freezes. Plus we got a pandemic going on. Reduced hours and jobs. Our country is in a recession, which is worse than the great depression. Folks don’t wanna hire vets with PTSD. Lots of folks hurting. Suicide rate continues to increase. I’ve been giving it my all as a content creator though. Edgar Allan Poe couldn’t even get the local press to publish his work. You can only do so much in a cruel world that cares not about your woes. I’m trying not to die naked on the street like Poe…

      10. Well whatever you do, don’t die naked. It sounds like it’s the same as England. Suicide rates up along with unemployment and domestic violence.
        I get the feeling that you’re a tough little cookie, very tenacious. Great that your putting your energy into something you love to do.
